Today, we are continuing our Silhouette Series with the elegant, classic trumpet style. When you are looking for a wedding dress, it is important to know the differences between the various styles so that you can let the staff at the bridal shop know exactly what you are looking for. Here's what you need to know about the trumpet style.
Trumpet Style Basics
The trumpet style is a traditional silhouette that creates a beautiful hourglass shape. The bodice is fitted, hugging to your curves through the hips. Starting from about the mid-thigh, the gown flares out at the bottom like the end of a trumpet. The flare is gradual, creating a smooth curve. This style can come with or without a train, and that train can be of any length.
Differences Between Trumpet and Mermaid Styles
If you think that this sounds a lot like the mermaid style, you're absolutely right. The two styles are very similar. The key difference is that the flare starts much lower on the leg in a mermaid dress, typically at or below the knee. This means that the mermaid style is tight through the upper legs, which can make mobility a bit of an issue. The flare of a mermaid style is typically more dramatic, as opposed to the smooth transition of the trumpet.
It is important to note, though, that many bridal shops use the two terms interchangeably, as the styles are so similar. Be specific about what you are looking for to ensure the staff can find you the appropriate style.
Body Types for Trumpet Styles
The trumpet style can be incredibly flattering if you have the right body type for it. Those who have curves look absolutely stunning in trumpet gowns. However, those who have a more boxy frame may find that the style accentuates a lack of definition between the waist and hips. In addition, those who are on the petite side may find that a large trumpet flare overwhelms their small frame. Of course, no two dresses are alike, even within the same style, so you should try on at least a few before making your final decision.
