Destination Dresses: What to Wear When You Elope

When you elope, you get to focus on doing everything the way you want to do it. No worrying about friends and family members — your dress, flowers, and décor are exactly what you want it to be. And that means that you aren’t restricted to traditional dresses when you get married. Think about your destination before you decide on your wardrobe.

The Beach Wedding

You don’t want to deal with a swirling tornado of lace and fabric as you traverse down the beach while eloping. For a beach wedding, you want a light, airy dress that’s mid-length. Movement in the fabric is desirable, but a long train is going to get caught in the sand and water.

Pair your beach wedding dress with wedges or flats, and be sure to practice walking in the sand with the shoes you’ve chosen! The last thing you want is some uncomfortable chaffing. A shawl or wrap can help you avoid the chill as the tropical breezes blow.

The Glamour Wedding

A flashy, glamorous wedding means you need to pull out all the stops. If you’re having a Vegas-style wedding, it’s time to go over the top. Some ideas include:

  • Historical wedding dresses from your favorite time period. A flapper-style dress from the 1920’s or an old-fashioned Victorian are equally acceptable.
  • Sparkling, shining wedding dresses. A classic wedding dress can be dressed up with sequins and glitter, making them pop — especially under the bright lights.
  • Bohemian wedding dresses. Want to be inspired by the 60s and 70s? Boho wedding dresses have a special vintage style, designed to be loose and flowing.
  • Contemporary and modern wedding dresses. Long, slick lines and a dramatic train make for a contemporary wedding dress that has both style and class.

Glamour weddings give you a lot more leeway regarding how you want to dress; you can find something for any theme.

The Adventure Wedding

Are you traveling out of the country for your wedding? If so, you’re going to have some additional considerations. You’ll need fabrics that travel well if you’re going to elope abroad. Dresses for a destination wedding can be made out of tulle, crepe, wool, or embroidered lace. You may also want to make a note to find out where you can get your dry cleaning done at your destination, just in case your dress has to be ironed out or cleaned.

For a destination wedding, you may also want a dress that doesn’t fill up an entire suitcase. That doesn’t mean you can’t have a long, flowing skirt, but you may have to leave a lengthy train at home. Don’t forget to check the temperatures where you’re going as well, especially if the wedding is going to be held outside.

There’s a dress for any occasion, and if there’s a dress that you’ve already fallen in love with, a few alterations may be enough to make it perfect for your elopement. Contact us at TK Bridal & Alterations; if we can’t find the perfect dress, we can create it!
